Team Analysis: Which team will rise first; BGSM, NLEX or Mahindra?

(c) PBA Media Bureau

Let us talk about the struggling squads!

THE METHOD- In this method, we will be using these 11 (eleven) statistics. We will calculate if a team out-did his opponent in each stat. If the team win in that stat, it will get a score of 1. If he loss, it will get a score of 0.

We also have ties which will be given a score of 0.5. Below, you can see the 11 statistics and the difference that will be rated as tie. (So a 50 against 45 rebounds will mean 0.5 for each team).
Rebounds: 5
Assists: 3
3PTs Made: 2
Opponent FG%: 4%
Steals and Blocks: 1
Opponent T.O.: 2
Fastbreak Pts: 4
Pts in the Paint: 6
1st Quarter: 2
4th Quarter: 2
Bench Pts: 5

If a team wins, he will get a positive value and a negative value if he loss.
Will this really work?- Yes. I agree that those eleven stats are not equal in terms of importance but our main objective here is to find out the strengths and weaknesses of each team. As we go deeper into the season, the true identity of each team will come out and we will have a clearer view of what they should do and what do they need to perform better.

 GINEBRA
Rebounds: 1 -1.5
Assists: 2 -2
3PTs Made: 0.5 0
Opponent FG%: 2 -1.5
Steals and Blocks: 1 0
Opponent T.O.: 0 -2.5
Fastbreak Pts: 0.5 -1
Pts in the Paint: 1 -1
1st Quarter: 1.5 -0.5
4th Quarter: 2 -2
Bench Pts: 1 -0.5

If the playoffs starts today, Ginebra will not make it. Fortunately, they still have six games to make things right.

Just like last conference, Ginebra is elite in finishing games and forcing turnovers. The problems are on the other aspects of their game.

Of course, outside shooting will not be a strength, as last season taught us. But, without a main man as good as Justin Brownlee, Ginebra will benefit with better spaces. Without a good pull from their three-pointers, the paint is more congested, making it harder for their drives to succeed.

Their bench is also pretty awful. Last Gov. Cup, they also did not rely that much with their bench but the minutes distribution of coach Tim this season is more team friendly, with only Japeth playing more than 33 minutes. Meaning, he is asking more from their support group and they are failing to deliver.

Simplifying things, Ginebra just need one more guy who can support Japeth Aguilart with consistent 14 points production. Tenorio is averaging the second most points but he is only shooting 39.5% on the field.

I think, their pace is also not helping. They are the second slowest team right now and they are attempting the least numbers of shot. A slow pace means they are not maximizing their versatile guards and forwards.

It is hard to question the most accomplished coach in the history of the league but I think, they badly need to speed things up.

 NLEX
Rebounds: 0.5 -0.5
Assists: 0.5 -1.5
3PTs Made: 0 -1
Opponent FG%: 0.5 0
Steals and Blocks: 0 -1
Opponent T.O.: 1 -3
Fastbreak Pts: 1 -2.5
Pts in the Paint: 0.5 -3
1st Quarter: 1 -2
4th Quarter: 0.5 -1.5
Bench Pts: 1 -2

I don't want to use the word "struggling" to describe NLEX because this is basically an adjustment period for them. The numbers above show that they can do a little bit of everything.

As expected from a Coach Yeng squad, NLEX is looking for leak outs and that was the main reason of their great score on Fastbreak Pts. The bench is of course a strength with Coach Yeng's rotation.

Their biggest problem lies with their inability to convert three-pointers which is a linchpin to coach Yeng's offense. They have the worst efficiency with 23.6%. Garvo Lanete is attempting the most with 6.0 long bombs per game but he can only connect on a measly 20% rate. That is unacceptable!

One thing that can try to put more emphasis is forcing turnovers. They are forcing the most turnovers per game which should be a good partner for fastbreak scoring.

They could face elimination this conference but the team is on the right direction.

 MAHINDRA
Enforcers
Rebounds: 0 -2
Assists: 0 0
3PTs Made: 0 -1
Opponent FG%: 0 -1
Steals and Blocks: 0 -2
Opponent T.O.: 0 -3.5
Fastbreak Pts: 0 -3
Pts in the Paint: 0 -3
1st Quarter: 0 -1.5
4th Quarter: 0 -3.5
Bench Pts: 0 -3

Even though they haven't won a single game, they actually have tantalizing numbers. Their excellent score on Opponent T.O. was due to their excellent protection of the ball. They have the least average turnovers per game.

That is a great thing to know for a team who has no chemistry at all when the season begun. A lot of credit should be given to their coaching staff. Coach Gavina and his assistants were also successful in juicing out points from the weakest bench in the league.

One thing that they badly need to improve on is their flow. I think, their scheme is just fine but the skill level of their players and the defense of their opponent are the main proponent of the big egg beside Assist.

If they can improve that, they should be able to grab at least one W this conference.
