Rain or Shine, Globalport and Phoenix, what are they doing to be at the upper echelon of the standing.
THE METHOD- In this method, we will be using these 11 (eleven) statistics. We will calculate if a team out-did his opponent in each stat. If the team win in that stat, it will get a score of 1. If he loss, it will get a score of 0.
We also have ties which will be given a score of 0.5. Below, you can see the 11 statistics and the difference that will be rated as tie. (So a 50 against 45 rebounds will mean 0.5 for each team).
Rebounds: 5
Assists: 3
3PTs Made: 2
Opponent FG%: 4%
Steals and Blocks: 1
Opponent T.O.: 2
Fastbreak Pts: 4
Pts in the Paint: 6
1st Quarter: 2
4th Quarter: 2
Bench Pts: 5
If a team wins, he will get a positive value and a negative value if he loss.
Will this really work?- Yes. I agree that those eleven stats are not equal in terms of importance but our main objective here is to find out the strengths and weaknesses of each team. As we go deeper into the season, the true identity of each team will come out and we will have a clearer view of what they should do and what do they need to perform better.

The Elasto Painters was one of the most anticipated team, entering the season, due to the departure of the faces of their franchise, coach Yeng Guiao and Paul Lee. So, did they change?
How about checking their TSA score from last season's Philippine Cup.

The rotation and minutes distribution remains the same but the scheme, overall, is different. Defense is more emphasize under coach Caloy. They are limiting their opponent to the second least points per game.
Their outside defense pumped the number beside 3Pts Made. They are giving up the least number of three-pointers per game and 3FG% at 5 and 18%. Flow is not that stressed as shown by the 1.5 total out of 4.
Rain or Shine is also highlighting more of their outside capabilities than their inside work. We seldom see them go directly to the post and there drives are not ending near the rim, as much as last season. That is a big change from last season.

Phoenix suffered a shameful 44-points defeat on the hands of Star Hotshots. Even with that defeat, Phoenix is still on the mix with their 2-2 record.
The most obvious thing that the Fuel Masters are doing is jacking up threes. They are attempting 36 shots per game, hitting 12 of it, the top output so far. Leading them in that aspect is Simon Encison who average 5 long balls per game with 43.5% efficiency!
Other than that, Phoenix don't standout. Defensively, they are giving up the second most points per game and the highest FG%. An explosive offense needs at least an average defense to get Ws so Phoenix better put focus to it, too.

Coach Franz Pumaren went against our expectations by playing a slow-pace, full of set plays, offensive scheme. That resulted into a league leading 3-1 record, so far.
Above, their 3PTs Made is the most obvious one. Globalport is attempting the 4th most three-pointers per game and hitting 10 of it, 4th in the league. I guess, that is still below our expectation.
One other big scheme-choice that worked for them was putting KG Canaleta in the 4 position. KG was up to the challenge as he grabs an average of 8 boards per game. With his presence in the PF position, the spacing is much better for Globalport.
That is one of the primary reason why they are also effective in the paint. You will also see above, that they have a good score in Fastbreak Pts and Assists. So, overall, they have a very complete offense, more than capable of destroying any defense right now.
Defensively, the effort is as high as ever and that leads into a very good score beside Opponent FG%. They are limiting their opponent to the least points per game and the second worst FG%.
Pace wise, they are the slowest! I think, coach Franz realized that they have an elite offense that they can sacrifice the pace to help their defense. If you watch them play, Globalport are using great set plays that results in good looking shots.
I am bullish about the chances of Globalport for this year.
